Russian Azalia Amineva challenged an Algerian athlete to a fight Iman Khelif which has been approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) before the Paris Games, despite failing the gender test.
The IOC has cleared Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting (Taiwan) to compete in women’s boxing at the Paris Olympics. Both athletes have already reached the semi-finals of the competition, securing at least bronze medals.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. Amineva lost to Khelif at the 2023 World Boxing Championships.
“I am ready to fight Khelif and give an answer to all the girls who suffered along the way. Any day, anywhere. Except August 8, the date I made my professional debut. Professional or amateur boxing. It doesn’t matter. I am waiting for an answer. Time has passed!” — Amineva, 21, wrote on her social media page.
Boxing competitions at the Olympic Games are organised by a special unit created by the IOC Executive Board. In June 2023, the IOC Session expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote.
