The International Olympic Committee (IOC) bears the brunt of widespread criticism of athletes who failed the gender test competing in women’s boxing at the Paris Games, European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) Secretary General Kirill Shchekutyev told .
In 2023, the IBA suspended Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The IOC allowed them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024. Both athletes have already reached the semi-finals, securing at least bronze medals.
“Many team representatives contact us at the EUBC with perplexity over the performances of athletes at competitions who have already failed gender tests. Basically, at the Paris Games, we see girls being beaten. And these two athletes have already secured medals at the Olympic Games. I will not say whether these two athletes deserve such criticism, but I can say one thing: the IOC is to blame for this situation, it was the IOC that set these girls up. The IBA provided all the results to the IOC, but the IOC simply did not want to react. Now we are getting this result. Once again, the EUBC will support all European boxers who have faced various challenges at these Games. Boxers do not throw themselves away,” Shchekutyev told .
Boxing competitions at the Olympic Games are organized by a special unit created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC session expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote.
The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
