The IOC responded to the IBA press conference by saying that boxing needs a “new and strong federation”.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) communications director Mark Adams called Monday’s International Boxing Association (IBA) press conference a travesty and said world boxing needed a new federation to take control of the sport.

On Monday, the IBA held a press conference to criticize the IOC for hosting the Paris Olympics and allowing two boxers previously suspended for failing a gender test. In 2023, the IBA suspended Iman Khelif and Lin Yuting from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following the gender test, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The IOC allowed them to compete in the women’s competitions in 2024. Both athletes have already reached the semifinals, securing at least bronze medals at the Paris Games.

— How does the IOC see the development of boxing and its Olympic future after yesterday’s IBA press conference? There is now no federation strong enough to represent the interests of boxing, and the IBA will continue the conflict with you over two athletes.

“I will not comment on the chaotic scenes that took place yesterday. I believe you also participated in this “press conference”. I can say that it clearly demonstrates that boxing needs a new federation that will represent the interests of the sport. If you ever needed confirmation that the IBA is not fit to play a leading role in world boxing, then look at those who participated in this travesty yesterday. I think that is all you need to know.

Boxing is a very important Olympic sport for us, not just because it is a great sport. The best agent for selecting a new boxing federation is yesterday’s “press conference”. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. I think it will make you understand why we desperately need a new federation. We will have a boxing tournament at the Paris Games, as well as in Tokyo. We are not a federation, so we really need a new formation. We hope that after yesterday, some national federations will come together and bring boxing to Los Angeles. We want to see boxing on the programme at the Los Angeles Games. Now it all depends on the boxing community, which must organise itself for the good of the sport and the athletes,” Adams said at the IOC briefing.

Boxing competitions at the Olympic Games are organized by a special unit created by the IOC. In June 2023, the IOC session expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote.

The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
