Algerian Khelif, who failed gender test, reached final of boxing tournament at 2024 Olympics

Algerian Iman Khelif has reached the final of the boxing competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

In the 66kg semi-final, Khelif beat Thailand’s Janjai Suwannapheng 5-0. Thus, Khelif ensured at least a silver medal at the Games in the French capital.

In the 1/8 finals, the Italian Angela Carini refused to continue the fight against Khelif, falling to her knees and crying directly in the ring. In the quarter-finals, the Algerian athlete beat the Hungarian Anna Lutsa Hamori (5-0).

In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting of Taiwan from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cleared them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024.

The Olympic Games will end on August 11.
