Russia’s Azalia Amineva said she did not feel a big difference in power in her fight against Algeria’s Iman Khelif at the 2023 World Boxing Championships compared to fights with other rivals.
In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. Amineva lost to Khelif at the 2023 World Boxing Championships.
“Personally, I didn’t feel a big difference in power at that moment. In my opinion, internal experiences prevented me from succeeding. I found out who I should fight, got a little worried, got upset and couldn’t pull myself together. But in the third round, I managed to knock Khelif down. This gave me confidence. I think that after two years I will be able to get back into the ring with her and take revenge,” RT quotes Amineva.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has cleared Khelif to compete in women’s competition. She reached the final of the boxing tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the 66kg category and secured at least a silver medal.
