India’s Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement after being disqualified from the wrestling tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
On Tuesday, 29-year-old Phogat reached the final of the 50 kg category of the wrestling competition. However, on Wednesday morning, she was unable to take the weight. According to media reports, the athlete’s weight exceeded the required value by 100 grams. Phogat was suspended from the competition and deprived of her guaranteed silver medal.
“The fight won me, but I lost. My courage has left me, I have no more strength. Farewell to the fight, 2001-2024,” Phogat wrote on social media.
Phogat is a bronze medalist at the 2019 World Championships and a multiple medalist at the Asian Championships.
The Paris Olympics will end on August 11.
