Kravtsov on Helif’s Olympic gold: “It’s a shame for the girls, they lost, let’s say, to a man”

Russian boxing coach Eduard Kravtsov spoke about the victory of the Algerian athlete Iman Khelif at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, stressing that he felt sorry for his rivals.

On Friday, Khelif, who had failed the gender test, beat China’s Yang Liu in the final of the boxing competition in the weight category up to 66 kg at the 2024 Olympics.

— A kind of mockery of the Olympics as a whole. Everything seems so lost. There is an Olympic motto that says that the strongest must win. But there are no equal conditions and universal human values that existed at the Olympics. And it is a pity for the girls who boxed in this weight category, they could rightfully compete for gold. We lost, let’s say, to a man. “What good can happen here,” Kravtsov was quoted as saying by Championship.

In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following the gender test, it was proven that the athlete has XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) admitted Khelif to women’s competitions in 2024. Her results at the Games sparked strong reactions in the media and society. The Algerian woman complained of harassment on social media, her father showed her birth certificate to prove that the athlete was born a girl.

The Olympic Games in the French capital will end on August 11.
