Robert Garcia: We may consider a rematch with Bogachuk if Crawford is unavailable

Vergil Ortiz’s trainer believes the Ukrainian deserves a second fight

Robert Garciacoach of the interim WBC light middleweight champion Virgil Ortizsaid he was ready to consider the option of a rematch with the Ukrainian Sergei Bogachukif it is not possible to agree on a fight with the former absolute champion in two weight categories Terence Crawford.

“We can look at a rematch. It was a great fight, a close fight. So if the offer comes and Crawford is unavailable, why not do a rematch? Sergey definitely deserves a rematch. He worked his ass off too, came out and surprised the world because not many people expected him to fight like that and give a fight like that.”

In the first and eighth rounds, Bogachuk knocked his opponent down, but after all 12 rounds, the judges were on the American’s side. One of the referees counted a draw in his scorecards (113:113), the other two gave a minimal advantage to Ortiz (114:112, 114:112).

Thus, the American continued his unbeaten march in the professional ring, but for the first time he finished the fight without a technical knockout of his opponent.

Vergil Ortiz has taken over the WBC interim light middleweight title from Sergey Bogachuk.
