Iman Khelif, who failed the gender test, was stripped of her title as Algeria’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

Algerian Olympic boxing champion Iman Khelif has been stripped of her national team’s flag bearer title at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the Associated Press reports.

Earlier it was reported that 25-year-old Khelif, along with athlete Djamel Sejati, would become the flag bearer of Algeria, but instead the flag was carried by gymnast Kaylia Nemours, who won the competition at the 2024 Olympics on uneven bars. The closing ceremony is currently taking place in Paris.

— Boxer Iman Khelif was supposed to carry the Algerian flag, but gold medalist gymnast Kaylia Nemours and track and field bronze medalist Djamel Sejati carried the flag in Khelif’s place. It was unclear why the change was made, the Associated Press reported.

On Friday, Khelif, who failed the gender test, beat China’s Yang Liu in the 66kg boxing final at the Olympics.

In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif and Lin Yuting from the World Championships in India for failing to meet eligibility criteria. Following gender testing, the athletes were found to have XY chromosomes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed them to compete in women’s competitions in 2024, and the organization’s head, Thomas Bach, called for an end to discussions about athletes who failed the gender test.

The Paris Olympics took place from July 26 to August 11. The next Summer Games in 2028 will be held in Los Angeles (USA).
