Athletistic / Olympic Games. Russian double Olympic boxing champion Alexei Tishchenko has reacted to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach’s refusal to be re-elected for a new term.

“It would be more correct and democratically correct if the representatives of the countries elected the president of the International Olympic Committee. After all, the IOC is one of the world’s leading sports organizations and the representatives of the countries should lead it.

“It would be great if there was an opportunity to appoint Umar Kremlev as IOC President. He would be able to implement the ideas and approaches he has repeatedly spoken about. This would provide more opportunities for athletes and the IOC would become more transparent,” Tishchenko was quoted as saying by Soviet Sport.

In 2016, Umar Kremlev became Secretary General and then President of the Russian Boxing Federation. In 2020, he was elected President of the International Boxing Association (IBA). On May 13, 2022, he was re-elected as head of the IBA uncontested: his main competitor, Dutch Boris van der Vorst was suspended from the elections due to the creation of a group that the IBA accused of conducting election campaigns outside the “election period”. Later, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne (Switzerland) overturned the decision to remove van der Vorst from the elections. On 25 September 2022, the IBA Congress was held in Yerevan, during which the national federations refused to hold re-elections, thus supporting Kremlev.
