Ukrainian loses to American champion in their first fight in 2023
Promoter Eddie Hearn reported that his protégé, the IBF welterweight champion Jaron Ennis (32-0, 29 KO) will defend his title against the mandatory challenger, Ukrainian Karen Chukhadzhyan (24-2, 13 KO).
“His mandatory defense is already set and I’m not happy about it. Karen Chukhadzhyan is a good fighter, but he’s fought him before.”
“There’s nothing we can do about it, we want to make the biggest fights. It’s disappointing, but if it’s a fight that needs to be checked off quickly, well, we’ll do it.
“We want big fights for Jaron. The plan is definitely to fight unification fights. I have made a serious offer to Mario Barrios for a fight, we will see what he says,” Hearn said.
Let us recall that Chukhadzhyan met Ennis in January 2023. The American confidently won on points, all the judges gave each of the rounds to Jaron (three times 120:108).
In his last fight, Karen defeated Briton Harry Scarff in May 2024. All three judges recorded the Ukrainian’s advantage (three times 116:112).
Ennis defended his IBF title against Armenia’s David Avanesyan in July. After suffering a knockdown, Avanesyan’s corner decided to pull the fight between the fifth and sixth rounds.
