Referee Howie Booth has been suspended from UFC 305 due to controversial scoring in the fight between Australia’s Tai Tuivasa and Surinamese’s Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
The fight at the Perth (Australia) tournament ended with Rozenstruik winning by split decision. Booth considered Tuivasa to have won all three rounds. This assessment was the exact opposite of that of the other two judges. Booth was subsequently suspended from his work at the tournament, although he was supposed to referee the evening’s co-main event between Steve Erceg (Australia) and Kai Kara-France (New Zealand).
David Shaw, UFC senior vice president of international affairs and content, said the decision to remove the referee could only be made by the Western Australian Combat Sports Commission.
— The Commission is responsible for all these decisions. I guess someone gave the signal that Booth should not remain involved for the rest of the evening. It’s a good system of checks and balances, everyone is held to high standards. If I’m not doing my job, maybe I should sit on the bench for a while and reconsider my approach. I think that’s a principle of dignified living. But it’s not up to me to say whether the Commission acted correctly or not, ” Shaw quotes the Bloody Elbow portal.
