“He relaxed and let himself be led.” Former Bellator champion Koreshkov calls Adesanya’s mistake in Du Plessis fight

Russian fighter Andrei Koreshkov In a conversation with , he spoke about the mistake of ex-champion Israel Adesanya, which became the reason for his defeat in the fight with Drikus Du Plessis.

At UFC 305 in Perth, Australia, current UFC middleweight champion Du Plessis defeated Adesanya via fourth-round submission. For the 30-year-old South African fighter, the win was the first defense of the belt of his career.

— There were a lot of good hits in the fight, but there were no knockdowns. Did that surprise you?

– Not particularly. I was surprised by Du Plessis’ good tactics. He came forward, threw punches. I wouldn’t say they were technical strikes, but they were effective. And he landed a lot of blows on his opponent, using the quick approach method. And it paid off. In principle, thanks to that, he won the fight. I would probably point out that he is executing the battle plan well. It is clear that they insisted on certain things during the preparation.

“He seemed like a pretty average fighter to me, but in the end he beat three people who had already been UFC champions.

– In fact, I myself considered him a fairly average fighter in the category up to 84 kilos. I even suppose that he lost the fight against Strickland. But he won against all the other opponents, and it is surprising. I did not see anything particularly interesting in this fight, but I noticed this detail: it was clear that he was tired in the first two rounds, and, tired to a certain extent, he did not get tired more. In other words, he did not collapse below a certain level and functioned more or less in one state. He endured it and, in these conditions, he was able to work normally, well and execute the fight plan that they had developed.

– What mistake did Adesanya make when he let himself be choked?

“It seems to me that he slowed down a little and wanted to pause and rest. And Du Plessis filled this pause in time with a forward momentum when he was able to reach him and hit him. He started to hit twice, and Adesanya started to turn away, giving him his back, and Du Plessis knocked him down, put him on all fours and strangled him. In other words, the mistake was that in a certain episode he relaxed and let himself be led,” Koreshkov told .
