The International Boxing Association (IBA) welcomes the decision of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) to remain under the auspices of the IBA and not move to the alternative federation World Boxing.
At the ASBC congress in Al Ain (UAE), the issue of transferring the organization under the auspices of World Boxing was discussed. As noted by Insidethegames, of the 36 national federations whose representatives attended the congress, 14 voted in favor of joining World Boxing, 21 voted against and one delegate abstained. Thus, ASBC remained in the IBA.
— The IBA welcomes the democratic decision of the delegates to the ASBC Congress to remain in the IBA. Pluralism of opinion means true democracy, and the IBA values the diversity of views of the national federations. However, the decision is taken by majority vote and the IBA supports the decision.
No effort goes unnoticed and the IBA values the hard work of each National Federation to take boxing to new heights in each country. The IBA, in turn, is committed to supporting our National Federations in their efforts with actions, not words.
The politically motivated intentions to join World Boxing, supported by some members, are reckless. There is no point in joining an organization that has no intention of developing boxing, but only pursues the personal ambitions of its leaders. The move towards World Boxing will undoubtedly harm the development of the sport in these countries, as evidenced by the results of the performances of athletes representing the world boxing federations at the Paris Olympics.
The IBA is well aware that National Olympic Committees, under pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), are conducting politically motivated campaigns in their countries to pressure national federations to withdraw from the IBA. Firstly, this is interference in the work of an independent organisation, and threats of withdrawal of funding if national federations remain in the IBA are contrary to the welfare of athletes.
The IBA urges national federations to take decisions with caution as there will be no room for a 180 degree turn if a federation decides to withdraw. The IBA remains committed to supporting its athletes, coaches and national federations, a statement on the IBA website said.
In June 2023, the IOC session expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement by a majority vote. Boxing competitions at the Olympic Games are organized by a special unit created by the IOC Executive Board. An alternative organization to the IBA, World Boxing, was founded by the national federations that left the IBA.
