Shakur believes Haney will beat Lomachenko again if rematch happens
WBC Lightweight Belt Holder Shakur Stevenson shared his opinion regarding the possibility of a rematch between the world champion IBF And IBO Vasily Lomachenko and the world champion according to WBC in the first welterweight Devin Haney.
“To be honest, I think Lomachenko won the first fight. But I think if Devin is smart, he’ll get in the ring, use his legs and outbox Lomachenko instead of standing in front of him as much as he did in the first fight.”
“I can see Devin winning the second fight if his corner and dad adjust and go out there and outbox Lomachenko.”
In May 2023, Haney defeated Lomachenko by unanimous decision (116:112, 115:113, 115:113).
Haney had his last fight in late April in Brooklyn against Ryan Garcia. Devin was knocked down three times during the fight. According to the judges’ scorecards, Ryan Garcia won with scores of 114:110 and 115:109. Another judge recorded a draw (112:112).
Garcia, despite the victory, did not take the championship belt from Haney, as he exceeded the agreed weight category limit. According to the head of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, the belt does not become vacant, but remains with Devin. Haney himself immediately hinted at a rematch after the defeat.
In late May, it became known that Garcia had failed a repeat doping test after his fight with Devin Haney. The second test, like the first, showed a positive result for ostarine, a drug used to improve endurance. Therefore, Haney remains undefeated in the professional ring, and the fight against Ryan Garcia was declared a no contest.
Recall that Lomachenko broke off negotiations about a fight with Gervonta Davis after deciding to take a break from his career. Vasily, who defeated George Kambosos by technical knockout in May, intends to rest for the rest of the season and return to the ring in 2025.
