President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko expressed condolences to the family and friends of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR, multiple world and Olympic champion Alexander Medved.
On Monday, the President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) Mikhail Mamiashvili announced that Alexander Medved had died at the age of 87.
Lukashenko stressed that Alexander Medved devoted himself entirely to serving Belarus and made an invaluable contribution to the development of the national wrestling school and the Olympic movement.
— Please accept my sincere condolences on the death of world sports legend Alexander Vasilyevich Medved. A great athlete, coach and public figure has passed away. He stood on the highest step of the Olympic podium three times, demonstrating virtuoso technique and heroic power on the mat, and was recognized as the best freestyle wrestler in the history of the sport, the condolence text published by the press service of the Belarusian head of state says.
The flag-bearer of the USSR national team at the 1972 Munich Olympics, Alexander Medved, was recognized as the best freestyle wrestler in the history of the sport.
