Usyk: Would have knocked down Joshua in the first fight, lasted the 12th round 30 seconds longer

Ukrainian expects winner of their second fight to fight Tyson Fury

Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk spoke about the preparations for the rematch against the British Anthony Joshua. The Ukrainian also revealed plans for the near future after the fight.

“The fight with Joshua showed that I can box at heavyweight and win. I intend to win the second fight by showing quality boxing.”

“Anthony is a tough guy and a strong boxer, he should by no means be written off. In the rematch, he will be different, he will prepare differently. I will do that too.”

“Perhaps if there were another 30 seconds or a minute in the first fight in the 12th round, Anthony would have been knocked down. But that’s a guess, so I don’t think about it anymore. It happened the way it happened. I boxed 12 rounds and won.”

“I learned a lot from our first meeting. The coach watched that fight many times, and continues to watch it. We are developing combinations for a rematch, but I can’t tell all the secrets right now.”

“When the rematch is over, I think Tyson Fury will not want to miss the chance to unify the belts. A fight with him is possible for the winner of our duel.”

“I don’t plan to return to heavyweight yet. To fight Canelo Alvarez I need to lose 12 kg. It will be a disgusting fight. I will first finish what I planned at heavyweight, and then I can arrange a fight with Alvarez. The fight with Canelo will attract a lot of money, I do not rule out that it will take place.

“I consider my Olympic gold the highest achievement in my career. Now I have belts in several categories. Maybe if I have all four heavyweight belts, I will think about what to rate higher – the gold of the Olympics or the title of the absolute champion.

“I love watching Vasily Lomachenko, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fights, but there are a lot of fighters that are interesting to watch. I don’t watch boxing fanatically at all, but I do watch some fights with great enthusiasm.”

The second fight between Usyk and Joshua will take place on August 20 in Saudi Arabia. Last autumn, the Ukrainian defeated the Briton by unanimous decision and became the world heavyweight champion for the first time.
