World Boxing Association (WBA) rejects WBA light heavyweight title fight Dmitry Bivol with Briton Joshua Buatsi. The Russian boxer is forced to defend his title against the Mexican Gilberto Ramirez.
The WBA committee has approved a mandatory fight between light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol and his mandatory challenger Gilberto Ramirez. After receiving a request for special permission to fight Joshua Buatsi from the champion and after extensive study, the WBA denied that permission, said Carlos Chavez, chairman of the WBA championship committee.
Bivol and Ramirez have a 30-day negotiation deadline to agree on their shot at the previously reserved title.
Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) picked up a sensational win over Mexican Saul Alvarez in early May.
Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs) is a former WBO super middleweight champion and mandatory candidate for the WBA light heavyweight belt.
