UFC champion in the category up to 56.7 kg Valentina Shevchenko in an interview with , she admitted that she had injured herself before the fight with Brazilian Tayla Santos.
The duel took place on June 11 and ended in victory for Shevchenko by a separate decision of the judges.
I don’t like talking about it – I don’t like when a fighter loses or fails and starts blaming injuries or something. Yes, I had a leg injury. A week before the fight, I couldn’t jump on that leg. Yes it was. But when I went to fight, I tried to accumulate all the forces in me: emotional, physical and having a good fight. Yes, the opponent was good, yes, she used some nuances in her favor. But then again – here she went behind my back, was she able to do anything? No, she couldn’t. She was just lying there, while I was actively slapping her with my hands.
– Your knee was injured. Now – the same injury?
– Yes, it always changes a little: on one side, on the other. It turns out that in the last fight and a fight before, I started treating her seriously, we did plasma injections. There is always work in progress. Although I can’t say the knee is one hundred percent ready. But, in principle, if you hit a little differently, you can find an angle from which I can hit without loss,” said the 34-year-old UFC champion.
Shevchenko (23–3) is from Kyrgyzstan and also holds Peruvian citizenship. The athlete debuted in the organization in 2015, in 2018 she became champion, beating Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
