Golovkin appointed chairman of World Boxing Olympic Commission

Former middleweight world champion to work to keep boxing in 2028 Olympics

Former world middleweight champion and now head of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan Gennady Golovkin appointed chairman World Boxing Olympic Commission.

The functionary’s task will be to work with the International Olympic Committee to restore boxing to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The commission will develop ways for World Boxing to ensure that boxing remains at the Games. Other members of the commission who will work with Golovkin will be announced later.

Let us recall that Gennady is known for his high achievements in both amateur and professional boxing. The Kazakhstani won silver at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. After switching to professional boxing, Gennady became a multiple world champion in the middleweight division, unifying the championship belts twice.

Golovkin ended his career after a second defeat to Saul Alvarez in 2022. In February 2024, the ex-boxer became the head of the NOC of Kazakhstan.

The decision to include boxing in the 2028 Olympics has been postponed. Earlier, the IOC withdrew recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA). The IOC Executive Board concluded that the IBA had not met all the requirements that were set for the organization.

The IBA, led by Russian Umar Kremlev, appealed the decision to the International Court of Sport. CAS found that the IBA had not met the required conditions and did not meet the criteria for joining the IOC, and rejected the appeal.

The main contender for the status of the new International Federation is World Boxing. The body is headed by a Provisional Council of representatives of the federations of Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Sweden and the USA. In April of this year, the federation held the U-19 World Championship. The World Championship among adults is planned for 2025.

The IOC plans to begin the process of admitting a new boxing federation in 2025. If the new governing body does not start work on time, boxing risks not being included in the 2028 Olympics.
