The International Boxing Association (IBA) said that the letter from the International Olympic Committee (CIO ), sent to the national Olympic committees, testifies to political games and gross interference in the internal affairs of the federation. The corresponding press release was published by the IBA press service.
On Thursday, we learned that the IOC had sent a letter to the NOC in which it prohibited it from any relations with the national boxing federations that are members of the IBA. The letter states that national boxing federations which remain members of the IBA will lose all rights in the Olympic movement.
“The letter sent to all NOCs on September 30 is proof of the IOC’s scandalous political games. The IBA expresses its deep disappointment, this borders on sporting blackmail.
The IBA reiterates that we have no problem with the Olympic movement, we respect its values and boxing is an integral part of this movement. Tensions between the IBA and the IOC were caused by conflict with the IOC leadership, which systematically placed its political goals above the values and vision of the Olympic Games.
This is completely unacceptable to the IBA as we place our athletes, coaches, officials and members at the very center of our activities. The IOC’s unprecedented pressure on the federations is described as “direct interference” in the agenda of independent IBA members who have expressed their democratic desire to be part of the IBA and support a democratically elected president who they trust.
We call on our national federations to remain calm and not follow the intentions of the IOC, which wants to harm boxing. Trying to influence members behind the scenes is not what we expect from this organization.
The IBA, established in 1946, cannot be compared to any other existing boxing organization. We share the Olympic values and, unlike the IOC, we fight for the Olympic principles. Our goal is not to make money from athletes, coaches and national federations, but to serve them. The IBA is united and strong in the fight for the prosperity and development of boxing.
This letter is a clear example of blatant interference in the internal affairs of the IBA family. Advocating transfer to another organization that cannot develop the sport due to a lack of funding and managerial skills is an attempt to destroy the history of one of the oldest Olympic sports and jeopardize its future.
The IBA is the “Home and Future of Boxing” and there is no alternative. We once again call on our national federations to unite under the IBA banner and support all stakeholders,” the statement said.
In April, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the IBA’s appeal against the IOC session’s decision to withdraw recognition of the organization. In 2019, the IOC temporarily withdrew the recognition status of the IBA for economic reasons and due to a management crisis within the organization, and also presented demands for reforms. At the 142nd IOC Session in Paris, it was decided to exclude the IBA from the list of recognized international federations.
