Several British boxing champions have retired at 32 due to chronic traumatic encephalopathy

British boxer Liam Williams has announced his retirement at the age of 32 after suffering several concussions.

The British champion fears further blows to the head and further brain damage.

Williams expressed concern about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease associated with repeated blows to the head and concussions. This pathology, which gradually worsens over time and leads to dementia, can only be diagnosed posthumously.

“I know boxing is cruel,” Williams reportedly told the BBC.

Williams fought for the WBO interim welterweight title in 2017 and once for the WBO middleweight title in 2021.

At the regional level, he won several championship belts, including the Commonwealth welterweight title; British welterweight title and British middleweight title.

In total, during his professional career, he won 25 victories, suffered 5 defeats and one fight ended in a draw.
