Two-time Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Abdulrashid Sadulayev explained on why winning the World Championships in Albania was special for him.
Sadulayev won a gold medal at the World Championships in non-Olympic weight categories in Tirana. On Thursday, Sadulaev defeated Georgian representative Mirian Maisuradze in the final fight in the weight category up to 92 kg and became six-time world champion. Previously, Sadulaev became world champion in categories up to 86 and up to 97 kg.
– Sixth title! This victory was special for me, since I did not participate in the Olympic Games this year. And before the tournament they told me that only one wrestler was the world champion in three different weight categories – Anatoly Beloglazov. That’s why I also had this chance. It was a kind of motivation for me, and I went there only for “gold,” Sadulayev said on .
At the World Championships which concluded in Albania at the end of October, Russian wrestlers competed in neutral status and won five medals.
In July, the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) reported that Russian wrestlers who received an IOC invitation had refused to participate in the Paris Olympics. The federation declared that it “does not accept the principle of non-sporting selection which guided the IOC in establishing the list of eligible athletes, the aim of which is to undermine the principle of team unity”. The list of wrestlers assigned neutral status by the IOC did not include many of the strongest athletes, including Olympic champions Sadulaev, Zaur Uguev, Zaurbek Sidakov and Musa Evloev.
