“They’re kind of fairy tales.” Povetkin responded to accusations of anti-doping rule violations

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Alexander Povetkin has described accusations of anti-doping rule violations brought by the International Doping Control Agency (ITA) as fairy tales.

On Thursday, it was announced that Povetkin, 45, had been suspended by the ITA due to an alleged anti-doping rule violation effective October 21, 2024. The suspension decision was made based on an audit from the database of the Moscow Anti-Doping Laboratory (LIMS). The date of the violation was October 25, 2014, the reason for the suspension was “the athlete’s use or attempted use of a prohibited substance or prohibited method.” On October 24, 2014, Povetkin defeated Cameroonian Carlos Takam to win the WBC Silver title.

– I don’t understand at all. They are sort of fairy tales. Ten years later… Kind of absurd. Especially now that I’m done with boxing. I don’t understand why this was done,” reports the correspondent of , reporting Povetkin’s words.

Povetkin is an Olympic champion (2004), former world heavyweight champion. He has 36 victories in his professional career, he was defeated in three fights and another fight ended in a draw. In March 2021, the Russian lost to the British Dillian Whyte by technical knockout and soon announced his retirement.
