A civil action for damages against an Irish mixed martial arts fighter began at Dublin Crown Court on Tuesday. Conor McGregor and another man, reports the Guardian.
A woman named Nikita Ní Laimhín accuses former two-division UFC champion McGregor of rape in a Dublin hotel in December 2018. The trial has been postponed several times.
From the first day of the hearing, the parties’ lawyers took the stand, as did the doctor who examined Ní Laimhín at the hospital. Representatives for the alleged victim said McGregor had picked up Ní Laimhín, a hairdresser from Dublin, and her friend after a party on December 8. Later, at the hotel, she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the athlete and his friend. The court heard the woman had taken drugs and alcohol that day.
Dr Daniel Keane, who works as a gynecologist and forensic sexual assault expert, said Ní Laimhín was “very upset” and “shaking and crying” when she was brought in by ambulance.
McGregor’s defense noted that Ní Laimhín had several opportunities to complain about the way she was treated, but did not do so. It was also reported that the woman had been involved in an extortion attempt.
The trial is expected to last two weeks.
