Finalist of the 2019 World Boxing Championship and winner of the 2024 BRICS Games Lyudmila Vorontsova think that after the story with Iman Khelif of Algeria, the criteria for admission to women’s boxing competitions must be determined.
At the 2024 Paris Games, Khelif won gold in the women’s boxing competition. In the fall, Le Correspondent published a medical report according to which the athlete was diagnosed with the absence of a uterus and ovaries, as well as the presence of testicles in the inguinal canal and a “micropenis”. Meanwhile, the International Boxing Association (IBA) suspended Khelif from the 2023 world championship due to failing a gender test. Following a gender test, it was proven that she has XY chromosomes.
– This is an ambiguous situation which is currently being discussed. I cannot give a definitive answer. Maybe she was born that way. On the other hand, there must be admission criteria. (Perhaps) this is some kind of genetic disease, because of which it should not be allowed. That would be fair. If it’s a biological male, then of course it’s not fair to be against girls. But in her defense, I want to say that in previous world championships she was beaten, including by our girls. Maybe it’s a testament to her class that she’s grown and now she’s won. And before that, she lost to women. This fact can also be taken into account in her favor,” Vorontsova told .
Vorontsova reached the final of the Russian Championship in Serpukhov in the weight category up to 57 kg. This tournament is broadcast live on the Match! Fighter”. The final will take place on Saturday, November 9, the broadcast begins at 4:55 p.m. Moscow time.
