Russian boxer Shamil Khataev has retired due to health problems, the press service of the Russian Boxing Federation reported.
Khataev is 28 years old; in 2017 he became champion of Russia. Khataev’s brother, Imam, also participates in professional boxing.
“I had the passion, the strength and the will to become a great champion, but the doctor told me that I risked losing my eyesight if I continued.” I have to give up my dream. However, I want to thank my team, Eye of the Tiger, the people I trust who helped me reach the top, and those who believed in me. I am not discouraged by what is happening to me, but rather grateful for having had the opportunity to get this far. You will see me again as I will do my best to help my brother Imam reach the top. “I will always be part of the team, although now for me it will be outside the ring,” Khataev said.
The last time Khataev entered the ring was in mid-October in Canada, when he defeated Argentine Christian Rafael Coria by technical knockout in the third round.
