The World Boxing Council (WBC) explained on the official website why transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete in boxing.
— The WBC is committed to its values of fair competition. A martial arts duel must take place between two rivals of equal strength. There is currently no consensus on whether a fight between a transgender man and a cisgender (biological) man is a fair fight between two equal opponents.
An indicator like testosterone alone is not enough to ensure fairness in a fight. It can be said that by the time a transgender fighter begins their professional career, they have already gone through female puberty, which gives them the musculature and bone structure of a woman. Thus, a cisgender male fighter may have an unfair advantage over a transgender male fighter.
The WBC advocates that two equally qualified and eligible athletes compete in a cage or ring on equal footing and that matches be fair, competitive, entertaining and, most importantly, safe for all fighters. With the current level of scientific knowledge within the WBC, the consensus is that allowing transgender athletes to compete raises serious health and safety concerns, the organization said in a statement.
At the same time, the WBC stressed that it would continue to advocate for the protection of transgender people from discrimination in the workplace, employment, education and access to health care.
Earlier, the Congress of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) decided that transgender people who have transitioned after reaching the age of 12 will not be able to participate in women’s competitions under the auspices of this organization.
