— Barely a month and a half ago, I fought a hard fight for the IBA world champion belt. I managed to win the belt. And now for this ranking battle, I got to half of my best form, so something worked for my opponent. But I am satisfied with the result: I managed to achieve victory on my home soil and please the public. Regarding the future, I want to concentrate on my amateur career – I haven’t become world champion yet. I only managed to win gold at the European Championship. So now I’m going to give everything to win the world champion title. For the moment, I am more of an amateur than a professional: I play more for points than to try to eliminate my opponent,” reports the correspondent of , reporting Shumkov’s words.
At the end of September, Shumkov defeated world champion Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov by unanimous decision at the IBA Night of Champions tournament in Baku and won the IBA title in the weight category up to 57 kg. It was later announced that the boxers would have a rematch in January.
