British World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Tyson’s Fury urged the UK government to take tougher action on knife crime after his cousin was stabbed outside a nightclub on Sunday and later died in hospital.
– When we arrived, we found two men, 17 and 31, stabbed. They received first aid before help arrived. Both men were taken to hospital, where the 31-year-old died, police said in a statement.
British media reported that Fury’s 31-year-old cousin Rico Burton was one of two people attacked in Manchester. Burton and the 17-year-old were stabbed, with the latter still in hospital with serious injuries.
“My cousin was killed, stabbed in the neck, idiots carrying knives. This must be stopped as soon as possible. The UK government must toughen penalties for knife crimes, it’s a pandemic, the boxer wrote on social media.
A July report from the UK’s Office for National Statistics said the number of crimes reported by police using knives or sharp objects rose 10% in a year to 49,027 crimes.
