Former IBF light welterweight world champion Sergei Lipinets in a chat with after a first victory over former WBC belt holder, American Omar Figueroa, he said he was finally rewarded for his patience and hard work.
On Sunday night Moscow time, the 33-year-old Lipinets beat Figueroa after the opposing corner refused to continue the fight in the eighth round. Lipinets won the WBC Silver light welterweight belt. The last time the Russian boxer entered the ring was in April 2021, when he lost ahead of schedule to American Jaron Ennis in a welterweight bout. After this meeting, Lipinets decided to return to the first welterweight division. The Russian has 17 wins (13 by KO), two losses and a draw.
– I am very happy to have managed to win earlier than expected in a spectacular duel. Even if everything did not go as I wanted. Six months ago I flew to the United States to prepare for combat. But they gave me one opponent, then another, then the show was postponed. And so constantly. But I waited, endured and believed. And I finally got a good fight in the opening act of Figueroa-Broner. But hard work pays off – I was lucky. Broner was unable to enter the ring due to mental issues. A few new sore boxers appeared. And five days before the meeting, they called me to fight with Figueroa.
I am now a mandatory challenger for the WBC. With patience and hard work, it all paid off, it all paid off. Now I’m going to rest, in a few days I will fly to my grandmother in Kazakhstan, I haven’t seen her for a long time. And then I will most likely fly to Moscow, then I will return (to the United States). I hope I will prepare for the fight for the world title. Now I have to go back to the notes. I returned to my original weight, I feel more confident, – said Lipinets “”.
