“I wanted to retire after every fight, I felt sick in the toilet. But I won” – judoka Makhmadbekov

The representative of the Irkutsk region Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov told a correspondent that he won judo competitions in the weight category up to 73 kg in Spartakiad despite the circumstances.

In the final fight, Makhmadbekov defeated Danil Lavrentyev from the Kurgan region, Armen Agayan (St. Petersburg) and Kazbek Naguchev (Krasnodar Territory) became the bronze medalists.

– On the eve of the departures to Kazan, you were mostly quoted. Won – and not surprised?

– In fact, I was diligently preparing for the world championships, to which I hope to be admitted in a month. You have the perfect shape. And suddenly, a week before the Spartakiad, it was as if they had bewitched me. Every day hurts something. Four days in a row! The last thing he broke was his head. Blood is flowing, I sit up and think, “Damn, I’m tired!” Maybe take off? Why do I need this?

But I spoke with the coaches, they decided it was the right start. And from the first fight, everything went hard. There has been no such weakness in the past six years. I fought for another 10 and 15 minutes, but I never got so tired. Trauma, painkillers, bandaged knee, fingers, hands, head. Plus, we’re friends with the top six in our weight class. Together we train, eat, rest, walk. It is difficult to fight with each other, to agree with each other.

– And how did you end up?

“All of them are good, but they managed to grab someone, fight someone and drag them at will. Strong guys. Lavrentiev, the opponent in the final, great moderator, monitors nutrition. Three years younger, but very difficult to pass. The Almighty sees who is most dedicated to the cause. This is why Lavrentiev is successful in sports.

And in two minutes I was exhausted and endured, never happened to me. Even after the first fight, I wanted to retire. Then after the second. I sat in the toilet, it hurt, then I went to bed. And endured, there was no way out.

– You are trained by a person with the same surname Makhmadbekov.

– Two people, dear uncles. At home, we only talk about judo, even at the table, even in the wrestling room. The family is large, the younger brothers are also involved in judo, my cousin plays for the national team of Tajikistan, fought in the Olympics. We have a lot more Makhmadbekov on the way, wait guys.

– What will happen if you are not allowed at the World Cup?

– I think they’ll let him. It is wrong to mix sports with politics. During the tournament in Mongolia, we met the main representative of the IJF, the International Judo Federation, to allow us to fight against stereotypes. Although under a neutral flag, everyone knows that we represent Russia. In the same Mongolia, by the way, no oblique glances in our direction.
