UFC 278: Dvalishvili says Aldo hinted at retirement after loss

The Brazilian’s executioner at UFC 278, Merab Dvalishvili gave an interview after the fight and stated that José Aldo would have indicated the end of his career with the defeat last weekend

Jose Aldo was defeated by Merab Dvalishvili last Saturday, the 20th, at UFC 278, in Salt Lake City, in the United States. The Brazilian, who was coming off three consecutive victories, lost to the Georgian in the bantamweight clash (61 kg), by unanimous decision of the judges. After the fight, the executioner stated that the “People’s Champion” indicated his retirement with the result.

In an interview with “The MMA Hour”, Dvalishvili stated that Aldo revealed to him, still in the cage, that the fight was the last of his career at Ultimate. The former featherweight champion (66 kg) reportedly claimed he was on his last attempt to win the bantamweight belt. The result against the Georgian, however, would have decreed the end of the Brazilian’s career in the UFC.

“He told me (that he was going to retire), actually. When he was on the ground and I went to shake his hand, thank him for the fight and show my respect to him, he was on the ground and I tried to lift him up, and he told me: ‘This is my last fight, because that was my last title race.’ And then he said, ‘I think it’s over,'” said Merab Dvalishvili. The conversation would have taken place when the two embraced.

José Aldo has not publicly commented on the possibility of retirement after Saturday’s duel. The “People’s Champion” has competed professionally since 2004 and, today, at the age of 35, he has 31 victories and eight defeats in his career. After reigning in the featherweights, the Brazilian decided to step down in the division to try for a title in a new division.
