The Ukrainian will be waiting for his opponent following the results of the Haney-Kambosos rematch
WBC President Mauricio Suleiman thinks it would be fair to give the former lightweight world champion Vasily Lomachenko a chance to regain lost belts.
“He went through so much, like Usyk. It would be fair.”
“Lomachenko returned to Ukraine, worried about his country. Now he’s out to train and return to the ring in October. It would be fair for him to fight for the championship. Lomachenko is one of the best boxers in the world, he remains an incredible force.”
Earlier, promoter Bob Arum said he was ready to organize a fight for the title of undisputed lightweight champion between Lomachenko and the winner of the rematch Devin Haney – George Kambosos Jr. in early 2023. The second fight between Haney and Kambosos will take place on October 16 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
The Ukrainian boxer will return to the ring on October 29. Lomachenko’s fight with Jemaine Ortiz will take place at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York.
Lomachenko fought his last fight in December last year, defeating Richard Commey by unanimous decision. Subsequently, Vasily could have fought George Kambosos, but he refused it against the backdrop of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
