The winner of the Spartakiad in judo Kanikovsky: “In the final, the opponent changed tactics. I wasn’t ready for that.”

Judoist Matvey Kanikovsky said his opponent Arman Adamyan in the final fight at the Spartakiad of the strongest, he changed tactics compared to previous fights, he managed to win thanks to counterattacks.

On Wednesday, 20-year-old Kanikovsky won gold at the Spartakiad in the weight category up to 100 kg.

– I’m not very friendly with the language, but okay, ask.

What are you friends with then?

– With a little struggle. Not with language.

– How can a Muscovite your age get into judo and stick to it until Spartakiad gold? Were there other temptations?

– No temptations and hobbies. As he was brought to the section at the age of five, he began to work. At 14, I realized that my next route was just judo. He moved forward with confidence, never tried to stop or finish, and didn’t want to.

– What is the particularity of your victorious end?

– Opponent Arman Adamyan has changed tactics compared to our previous encounters. Prepared a surprise for me. I really wasn’t ready for that.

What was the surprise exactly?

– Armand started to fight with the wrong hand. It changed a lot, the fight immediately went downhill, the tactical plan broke down, throws stopped working. It was only possible to win by counterattacks.

– Where was it the hardest, in Kazan or in Mongolia, where did you win the Grand Slam tournament?

– And there and there were four fights. Everywhere is hard.

– Can the Spartakiade be considered as a selection to join the national team?

– Four of today’s finalists are already part of the national team. All four won’t be taken to certain competitions, of course, but we won’t come out of the national team. In this sense, the Spartakiad is not decisive, but an interesting start, where all the strongest participated.

Judo competitions within the framework of the All-Russian Spartakiad of summer sports among the strongest athletes in 2022 are held in Kazan on August 23-24.
