“I made a mistake dropping him on the ground” – Kirill Grishchenko on losing to Marcus Buchech Almeida

In late August, Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend Marcus Buchecha Almeida defeated Kirill Grishchenko with a leg submission.

Multiple undefeated MMA world champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, whose name is inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame, he did not register for the ONE Championship until July 2020. Buchecha, who does not know the defeat, maintained his record in MMA – he now has 4 wins, including one by knockout. The Brazilian athlete spent just 64 seconds defeating Grishchenko (5-2), a former contender for the ONE World Heavyweight Championship.

When asked what was wrong with the fight against Bucheci, Grishchenko replied:

“At first I missed his kick. Then, standing up, he tried to push Buchecha with a strike, but as a result he missed his pass to the legs, didn’t have time to defend himself, – Grishchenko cites ONE Championship.

Already at the start of the fight, a hard kick from the Brazilian knocked Grishchenko off his feet. For a while the fight continued in a standing position, where Almeida continued to set the pace. Using his strong point – grappling – Almeida moved the opponent to the ground, fixed both legs and went to painful – twisting the heel. Kirill Grishchenko quickly gave up.

Grishchenko, 31, well known to Greco-Roman wrestling fans, has quickly risen to the top echelons of global MMA. In February of this year, he was given a shot at the ONE World Heavyweight Championship, just 15 months after his MMA debut.

A native of Belarus admits he’s ready to admit his mistakes but still believes he’s superior to the Brazilian in kicking technique and can beat him:

– There was only a one in five chance that the fight would go according to this scenario, and I made a mistake. What happened cannot be changed. I was mentally and physically ready, but when Markus was in his element, he immediately showed he was a beast in the stalls. My mistake is that I let him go to the ground. I don’t want to speak ill of him. I respect him – Buchecha is a great athlete, but my kicking technique is an order of magnitude better. I’m going to kill him in my arms – it’s 100%.

Grishchenko acknowledges Marcus Almeida’s leading position in the division, but would like a rematch:

“He’s a tough opponent, one of the best in the division. Almeida has had four wins in the four fights under the auspices of the ONE Championship. I would really like to have a rematch with him, but I understand that now I don’t I won’t have such a chance. Almeida is going further, but for now I will have to rehabilitate myself for the defeat, I have to try to make a series of victories. I hope that in the future I will have the chance to meet him again.

The fight took place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium as part of the Johnson vs Moraes II card.
