President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Umar Kremlev expressed his condolences on the passing of two-time Olympic champion Boris Lagutin, calling the Soviet boxer a legend.
Lagutin died at the age of 84. Lagutin is a double Olympic champion (1964, 1968), double European champion and six-time USSR champion.
— A truly world-class man, Boris Nikolaevich Lagutin, has passed away. Honorary Master of Sports of the USSR. Double Olympic champion. Double European champion. Six times champion of the USSR. The man is a world boxing legend with a unique fighting style.
I would like to express my condolences to family and friends. Boris Nikolayevich was an exceptional person who always tried to develop boxing and helped the younger generation to master this craft. He always supported both with advice and a good deed, he was ready to help in each specific case. The older generation of athletes has always been equal and took the example of the strong personality of Boris Nikolayevich. And even after the end of his career, he did not give up his most important mission in life – to lead novice athletes into the big world of boxing. Once again, I ask you to accept my sincere words of sympathy and support in connection with the loss to relatives and friends,” Kremlev wrote on his Telegram channel.
