The fight took place in Los Angeles and lasted all 12 rounds. During the fight, Ruiz, 32, knocked down Ortiz, 43, twice – twice in the second round and once in the seventh.
Ruiz earned the 34th win of his career with two losses. Ortiz lost for the second time, also because of his 33 wins.
Thus, Ruiz became the mandatory candidate for the WBC heavyweight belt, held by Briton Tyson Fury.
