The International Olympic Committee responded to Moscow’s unprecedented influence on the international federation.

Boxing may not be included in the Olympic Games for the first time since 1912. This decision was announced today, September 9, at the International Olympic Committee.

The reason is systematic violations of the international federation of this sport. Among the problems, the IOC cited the financial dependence of the International Boxing Federation (IBA) on Russian Gazprom, the increasing influence of the office of the President of the IBA located in Moscow, contrary to the recommendations of the IOC to concentrate all of the management of the Federation in an office in Lausanne, and the removal of the Dutchman Boris van der Voorst from participating in the elections. President of the IBA in May of this year.

It should be noted that on September 25 an extraordinary congress of the IBA will be held in Yerevan, where repeated elections of the President of the Federation will be held with the participation of the current leader Umar Kremlev and van der Voorst.

So, the IOC has decided that for now, boxing is not included in the initial program of the Los Angeles 2028 Games, because the IOC is seriously concerned about the state of affairs in the IBA and will continue to monitor the reform process in the federation.

A new procedure for qualifying boxers for the 2024 Olympics was also approved. According to the new scheme, participants will be selected based on the results of five regional international tournaments in 2023. These are the Pan American Games in Santiago, the European Games in Krakow, the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands and the Asian Games in Guangzhou. The fifth qualifying tournament is likely to be the African Games in Accra.

It will be recalled that earlier the IOC suspended the IBA from qualifying for the Tokyo Games, and the qualification and the Olympic tournament itself were held under the leadership of the IOC working group.

After this, the IBA developed a new recruitment program for the 2024 Games. At first, the IOC agreed to the document, and it was approved, but then the Federation was again suspended from qualifying for the Olympics.
