The president of the European and All-Russian sambo federations, the first vice-president of the international sambo federation, Sergey Eliseev, told that he regretted the absence of Ukrainian athletes at the upcoming European championship.
The Ukrainian SAMBO team will not participate in the European Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, which will take place from September 15 to 18. A statement on the official website of the Sambo Federation of Ukraine says the decision is related to the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the competitions.
– We regret that our Ukrainian colleagues do not participate in the European Championship and that these athletes cannot prove themselves. We believe that politics has nothing to do with it, the strongest must participate in the competition. And the Ukrainian team is one of the strongest in Europe. Of course, sambo must unite athletes. We created our sport for this, so that we could have our own family. We all live very friendly. But they are trying to transfer all kinds of political moments to sports, we consider this unacceptable,” Eliseev told .
In March, the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions in a neutral status – under the FIAS flag, logo and anthem.
