Former undisputed world light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. in a chat with after the fight Gennady Golovkin and mexican Saul Alvarez said the Kazakh has had an incredible career.
The third fight between Alvarez and Golovkin took place in Las Vegas on Sunday morning Moscow time. The Mexican defended his WBO, IBF, WBA and WBC super middleweight titles, winning by unanimous decision. After the fight, Golovkin, 40, announced his intention to continue his career.
– Golovkin showed everything he could. However, age takes its toll. He tried to defeat the opponent, but he failed. I think that initially it would have been better for him to meet Andre Ward, but he chose Canelo (after which the story of their confrontation began – “”). And he needs to be respected for that. He’s had an incredible career in professional boxing, and I wish him the best for the next stage of his life,” Jones told .
Golovkin holds the IBF, IBO and WBA middleweight championship belts. In total, the 40-year-old Kazakh has 42 wins, two losses (both from Alvarez – now and in 2018) and one draw (also in a fight with Alvarez in 2017).
Former two-weight world champion Ward retired in 2017 after two wins over Sergey Kovalev. He has 32 wins to his name.
