russian boxer Dmitry Bivol revealed that the news of his upcoming title defense took him by surprise.
Undefeated WBA light heavyweight champion Bivol will face mandatory challenger and former WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs). The fight is expected to be the main event at the Abu Dhabi (UAE) show on November 5th.
“I wanted the Buatsi fight because it was offered to me,” Bivol told BoxingScene.com. We had a place, we had a rival. Of course we wanted to fight Buatsi.
Things are changing and I was a bit confused as to when and where this fight would take place. Now I’m glad it turned out that way.
I wanted to fight Zurdo Ramirez many years ago. Every fight I thought, “Maybe my next opponent will be Zurdo.” He’s a good opponent. I want to fight someone like Zurdo. He has 44 wins and no losses. He is very good.
Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) has held the WBA belt since November 2017. On May 7, 2022, the 31-year-old fighter defeated Mexican Saul Alvarez and defended the title. Initially, the Bivol team wanted to meet Briton Joshua Buatsi (16-0, 13 KO), bronze medalist of the 2016 Olympics, but the WBA rejected the Russian team’s request and decided to make a defense mandatory against Ramirez.
