Golovkin has 120 days to defend WBA middleweight title against Lara

This was the condition of the WBA, under which the organization gave permission for the fight between Golovkin and Alvarez.

WBA and IBF middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (42-2-1, 37 KOs) obligated to defend WBA title against regular champion Erislandi Lara (29-3-3, 17 KOs) within 120 days.

Golovkin is due to fight the Cuban by mid-January 2023. This was the condition of the WBA, under which the organization gave permission for the Golovkin fight against Saul Alvarez.

Recall, Golovkin said after his third fight defeat with Alvarez that he had big plans in the middleweight division.

On the night of September 18, Alvarez defeated Golovkin by unanimous decision and defended his titles. All judges gave Canelo the win – 116-112, 115-113, 115-113.

This was the third fight between the rivals. The first fight in September 2017 ended in a draw. A year later, the Mexican won by split decision.

Lara knocked out Gary O’Sullivan in the 8th round in May to retain the WBA World middleweight title.
