WBA, WBO and IBF World Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk recounted an episode in his career when he was pulled out of the pool in an unconscious state during practice.
“Suddenly you feel such pain in your knee and you think you can’t go, you just can’t go on. The muscles are so tight and the pain is just unbearable. Pain in the shoulder, knee or even at the end of the mustache.
But you can’t give up. If you give up now, that’s what you’ll do when you fight. This is a critical moment that you will definitely reach during the fight. Every athlete knows what it is. Nobody can do anything “next time”, so you don’t stop. You know, I’m a bit crazy, and that’s why my coaches watch me closely. If I pass out, they’ll take me out. Once, holding my breath underwater, I lost consciousness for a moment, and they immediately pulled me out of the pool,” the Ukrainian boxer said on his YouTube channel.
Usyk beat Britain’s Anthony Joshua by split decision in August and retained three heavyweight championship belts.
