Sunday's fixture at the Estádio do Dragão, set for a 20:30 kick-off, pits the title holders against an Arouca side that has enjoyed a strong start to the domestic campaign. Arouca opened their season with a 1-0 victory away at Vitória de Guimarães before securing a 4-0 home win over Moreirense, with Spanish forward Iván Barbero scoring twice.

FC Porto have traditionally dominated this fixture on home soil. In 10 previous meetings against Arouca at the Dragão, the home team has dropped points only twice, recording a draw in the 2023/24 season and a defeat in 2015/16.

Marítimo and Sporting action on Saturday

Marítimo, who returned to Portugal's top flight this season, have the opportunity to take sole possession of first place on Saturday afternoon. They host fellow promoted team Académico de Viseu at the Barreiros stadium in Funchal at 15:30.

Later on Saturday evening, Sporting host Alverca at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon at 20:30. Sporting have experienced a testing start to the season, following a 2-2 draw at Amadora and a narrow 3-2 victory over Vitória de Guimarães.

Sporting head coach Rui Borges is managing a reconstructed squad following the off-season departures of Morita, Hjulmand, Quenda, Diomande, Ricardo Mangas, and Trincão. Borges has selected Greek forward Ioannidis in his starting line-up ahead of Colombian striker Luís Suárez, who finished as the Primeira Liga top scorer in the 2025/26 season.

Ioannidis was substituted during the match against Guimarães after suffering muscle complaints, but the manager is expected to name him in the starting XI for Saturday's match if he recovers in time.

Incomplete fixture list and European postponements

The third round of the Primeira Liga features a split schedule across four days. Estoril Praia play Rio Ave on Saturday, while Sunday sees Vitória de Guimarães face Nacional, and Santa Clara host Famalicão. The weekend concludes on Monday when Gil Vicente host Casa Pia.

The round will remain incomplete as Benfica and Sporting de Braga have had their matches rescheduled to September due to their participation in European qualifying. Benfica are competing for a place in the Europa League main stage, while Braga are seeking entry to the Conference League league phase.

Benfica will visit Moreirense on September 9, while Sporting de Braga travel to Estrela da Amadora on September 10. Braga will carry two games in hand, having also seen their second round match against Gil Vicente postponed following a gastrointestinal infection outbreak within the squad managed by Spanish coach Carlos Vicens.
