FC Porto moved two points clear at the top of the Portuguese I Liga on Sunday after beating Arouca 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão.
Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga broke the deadlock in the 67th minute before substitute Borja Sainz sealed the victory four minutes from time to maintain the champions perfect start to the domestic season.
Both teams entered the matchday three encounter having won their opening two fixtures of the campaign. The result leaves Porto alone at the summit with nine points from three consecutive 2-0 victories, while Arouca dropped to fifth place on six points behind Sporting, Santa Clara, and Marítimo.
FC Porto enter the 2026/27 campaign as the defending Portuguese champions, hosting their home matches at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto. Arouca, who also began the top-flight season strongly, were aiming to maintain their unbeaten run in the competition.
Early Porto pressure and missed chances
Porto established early control, earning a corner in the sixth minute when José Fontán conceded. Moments later, Pepê saw a right-footed effort from a tight angle on the right intercepted following a through ball from William Gomes, before Jakub Kiwior had a header intercepted from a Gabri Veiga cross, and Gomes had a long-range shot blocked before Fontán conceded another corner.
A brief stoppage in play occurred in the 10th minute due to an issue involving Porto. Four minutes later, Pepê sent a right-footed shot off target from outside the penalty area after receiving a pass from Veiga following a set piece.
Porto continued to press forward but were caught offside on multiple occasions, with Jan Bednarek looking for Pepê in the 11th minute and Zaidu Sanusi attempting a through ball to Pepê in the 21st minute. Bednarek then headed wide from a Veiga corner in the 27th minute, shortly before Pepê and Veiga both missed the target with long-range efforts in the 28th and 30th minutes.
Goalkeeping saves and half-time parity
Arouca goalkeeper Ignacio de Arruabarrena was called into action in the 34th minute, saving a left-footed attempt from Gomes in the center of the box, right after Pablo Rosario was flagged for an offside pass to André Silva. Silva then headed wide from an Alberto Costa cross in the 36th minute.
Porto went close again five minutes before the break when Victor Froholdt headed wide from a Veiga corner. Arouca created their clearest opening of the first half in the 43rd minute when Barbero directed a header toward the top left corner from an Alfonso Trezza cross, only for Porto to save it, before Arruabarrena denied another Froholdt header in first-half stoppage time.
Woodwork hit and Spanish breakthrough
The second half opened with Porto pushing forward as Pepê fired wide from the right side of the area in the 50th minute after being set up by Costa. Arouca responded two minutes later when Lee Hyun-Ju struck wide from distance following a pass from Trezza, before Fontán conceded another Porto corner in the 53rd minute.
Porto nearly took the lead in the 57th minute when a header from Pepê crashed against the crossbar off a cross from Gomes. Moments later, Veiga had an effort intercepted and Gomes saw a left-footed shot saved in the bottom left corner by Arruabarrena, while offside flags halted moves involving Froholdt and André Silva.
Arouca made a double change in the 62nd minute, introducing Pablo Gozálbez for Hyunju and Dylan Nandín for Barbero. Five minutes later, Porto found the breakthrough in transition when Gomes dribbled past defenders on the right wing and picked out Veiga, who slotted a low shot under Arruabarrena to make it 1-0.
Second goal and closing exchanges
Arruabarrena denied Froholdt from close range following a Veiga through ball in the 70th minute. Both managers then made changes, with Porto bringing on Deniz Gül for André Silva while Arouca introduced Pedro Carvalho Santos and Brian Mansilla for Espen van Ee and Trezza, before Porto replaced Veiga and Gomes with Inbeom and Borja Sainz.
Inbeom received a yellow card in the 83rd minute, but Porto doubled their advantage three minutes later. After Sainz was twice denied by Arruabarrena in quick succession, Froholdt found Pepê, who delivered a low cross for Sainz to score first-time, marking the Spanish winger second goal in as many matches.
Porto brought on Nehuén Pérez for Bednarek while Arouca sent on Mateo Flores for Tiago Esgaio in the 88th minute. In the final minute of regular time, Froholdt had another shot saved in the middle of the goal after being set up by Sainz.
Arouca pressed for a late response in stoppage time as Naïs Djouahra missed from close range following a Mansilla cross, and Nehuén Pérez conceded a late corner. In the 96th minute, Pedro Santos dragged a right-footed shot wide from outside the box following a pass from Taichi Fukui.
