Kevin Magnussen admitted that he lost his orientation to some extent during the season which affected his results. But Singapore will try to correct the situation.
The start of the season for the Dane, who unexpectedly returned to Haas F1 due to known circumstances, was more than successful – earning points in three of the first four races. But then the results started to subside and Kevin explained one of the reasons for this.
It is worth recalling that in the last six Grand Prix Magnussen has only once finished above his partner Mick Schumacher. Only in Belgium did the German finish 17th and Kevin moved up one position.
Kevin Magnussen “Singapore Grand Prix – one of those stages where there might be an extra opportunity to excel. This is due to the nature of the track and how the race can run as there is a greater chance of safety car intervention, all sorts of incidents, etc.
I want to avoid trouble because the reward for this can be higher than usual. It seems that the circuits that require more pressure are more suitable for our car, although there is no guarantee that we will do well in Singapore.”
A few weeks ago, Haas announced that Magnussen had changed race engineer – now it was Mark Slade, a well-known specialist who previously worked at Renault and McLaren. And before that, Ed Regan worked first with Kevin and then Dominic Haynes.
“I changed race engineers a lot, so I was in a difficult situation and apparently I lost some orientation,” admitted Magnussen. – Working with the institutions, I have already tried to apply non-scientific approaches, but preferred to rely on my own feelings.
But now I’m trying to go back a few steps, maybe to the approaches we took at the beginning of the year to start over. It’s not that I’m dealing with bad engineers, it’s just that I haven’t been able to build strong working relationships yet.
Ideally, you achieve that you don’t even have to talk, because the engineer already understands what you mean. That’s the kind of relationship I hope to build with Mark.”
