Before the start of the race weekend in Singapore, Lewis Hamilton expressed hope that the partially renewed asphalt will make the Marina Bay track less bumpy, and if it does, the Mercedes car will be able to handle it better.
Lewis Hamilton: “It’s great to be back in this beautiful city – everyone feels like the 2019 race is an eternity. With 23 corners and rough terrain, this track is very difficult and I still remember my record qualifying lap I did in 2018, although not in much detail as I haven’t watched the video footage of it since.
But it’s definitely one of the best laps I’ve done in my career. You always hope that one day you will be able to make such an amazing circle again and experience something like this, but the sensations that day were simply unforgettable.
At the same time, I can confirm that we always had a lot of problems at the Singapore track before. I don’t think they had anything to do with the aerodynamics of Mercedes cars, but rather the details of the chassis settings. But the fact is, we’ve done worse here than our rivals. Let’s see how it goes this weekend. As far as I know the asphalt has been touched up on some parts of the track and it is possible that this will help us. Let’s hope it’s not as bumpy now as it used to be.
We hope the W13 will work better on this track, but again it all depends on how uneven the surface is here. Bumps often affect the car’s behaviour, causing it to destabilize in many cases, but how it handles it this time I don’t know. Although I have no expectations at all, I will just do my best this weekend, no matter how difficult it is.”
