Marco: We have already resumed negotiations with Honda

Helmut Marko, Red Bull motorsports adviser, spoke about how the Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT) engine building project is developing and noted that negotiations with Honda on a possible continuation of the partnership have already resumed.

“When Honda announced they were leaving Formula 1, we didn’t have much choice,” Marco recalled in an interview with Austrian TV channel ORF. – We also negotiated with Ferrari at the time. But you can imagine, if we had Ferrari engines now, they would probably work differently than the engines on Scuderia cars.

We have built an engine factory in record time and bench testing of our first engine has already started. We hired 300 top professionals, including some ex-Mercedes-Benz employees. Of course we always try to invite the best professionals.

At the same time, we do not yet have the knowledge needed to develop the electrical part of the power plant. But there are already contacts in this area, because here we want to reach the highest possible level. We are an independent team and can do everything ourselves.

But we are also open to collaborations, as this lightens the burden on Red Bull. And we have already resumed negotiations with Honda, as they show renewed interest in working together. At the same time, everything must be organized in such a way that our basic values are not violated. First, it suggests that, thanks to the incredible flexibility of our approaches, we are able to respond to anything very quickly.”

Apparently he means the end of attempts to reach an agreement with Porsche on a possible collaboration, which continued for some time, but the parties could not reach an agreement. The leadership of the German company had its own ideas about the principles of partnership, but Red Bull Racing is not ready to give up the independence that Helmut Marko is talking about.

Negotiations with Honda seem a logical continuation of a very successful partnership, which did not end even after the management of the Japanese company decided to end the factory program in Formula 1. A few months ago, Red Bull and Honda extended the power plant technical support contract through 2025, during which time the power plants on the Milton Keynes team’s machines will be branded as RBPT.
