On Friday afternoon, the track condition in Singapore traditionally left a lot to be desired – the tarmac was dirty, the cars slid – the riders carefully added speed so as not to risk an accident.
Leclerc took to the track and immediately returned to the pits due to problems with the brakes. The mechanics blocked her from the TV cameras with their backs and Charles ended up losing the first twenty minutes.
There were no incidents. Russell made a braking error and jabbed into the guardrail in Turn 11 with no effect on the car.
Red flags appeared in the 39th minute – Stroll crashed the car and hit the guardrail exiting Turn 5. It was not possible to return to the pits, on the orders of the engineer he stopped the car, it had to be evacuated.
Verstappen made a brake error and entered the safety zone at Turn 16, but kept moving.
Lewis Hamilton took the lead for the first time of the season with a lap time of 1:43.033 – 84 thousandths ahead of Verstappen.
